IIT student commits suicide in Guwahati

Guwahati: A female student hailing from Karnataka committed suicide on Wednesday in the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-G) campus here, police said.

Nagashri S.C. from Shimoga town was a mechanical engineering student and joined the IIT in July, IIT-G spokesman Labanu Konwar said.

A resident of Dhansiri Girls Hostel, Nagashri did not attend classes on Wednesday.

“When her roommate returned to the hostel, she found the room door locked from inside. As there was no response to repeated door knocks, campus security called police who forced open the door. She was found hanging from a ceiling fan,” Konwar said.

Academic pressure could not have her to take the extreme step, IIT-G officials said.

A police officer said: “Preliminary investigation indicate it was suicide. However, it can be confirmd only after post-mortem.”

Nagashri’s parents are scheduled to arrive in the city on Thursday.
