IGP’s tell-all book leaves top cops worried

Hyderabad, September 19: An IPS officer’s book, purporting to blow the whistle on the rot in the police system, is adding worry lines to the faces of the state’s top cops.

The book, written by Vinoy Kumar Singh, IGP of Vizag range, is said to contain explosive stuff on the rot in the police system and exposes how police officers become successful by playing the system and good cops get sent to the boondocks.

Titled ‘Suns and Darkness’, the 190-page book was written two years ago. Singh sought permission from the government to publish the book. But the government has been sitting on it upon the advice of some bureaucrats that the book had “explosive contents, is bad in taste and would show the government in a poor light”.

After repeated reminders by Singh, the government decided some months ago to appoint a committee to read the book and make a recommendation. DGP K Aravinda Rao and Hyderabad police commissioner A K Khan are in that committee but there has been no report so far.

In his preface, V K Singh says, “Here is a chronicle written by a police officer who failed in his mission to change the system for the better.”

He goes on to talk about selfish officers who can go to any extent to get a key posting. “These officers exploit the politicians. They indulge in all sorts of unlawful activities and then blame the politicians.” Some officers manage to get gallantry medals despite staging fake encounters and conducting faulty investigations. “This is why the public hates policemen and their image takes a severe beating,” he says.

Singh reserves his most withering comments for ‘supercops’ and ‘top cops’ whom he calls Rambos for stepping out of the system and bending any rule to get ahead. In contrasts, the ‘good officers’ are those who refuse to bend to politicians and the government and are marginalised as a result.
