New Delhi, September 23: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today launched a foundation course in Bhojpuri to promote it as an official language. Launching the course, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said, “Bhojpuri is not only a language but a lifestyle and a culture.
Sanskrit and Latin have most precise grammar and vocabulary. Bhojpuri too has a very precise grammar, rich vocabulary and literature.
” Lauding IGNOU for launching the course, Kumar said Bhojpuri is now no more confined to some areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh but has spread to various parts of the world. She said efforts were underway to get Bhojpuri recognised as an official language.
IGNOU Vice-chancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai said the University will start a separate Centre for Bhojpuri language, literature and culture within three months. A Certificate Course and Diploma Course in Bhojpuri language will be started soon.
The university also has plans to open a separate Centre for Indian languages during the period, he said. Pillai said IGNOU has emerged as world”s largest university with 2.4 million students undergoing various courses run by it.
