IED blast kills seven civilians in Afghanistan

Kabul, December 18: At least seven people have been killed and three children injured when a car hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in southern Afghanistan.

According to Afghan officials, the incident happened in the southern province of Kandahar on Thursday.

“Seven civilians — five women and two men — were killed and three children aged from two to eight were wounded,” AFP quoted Zalmai Ayoubi, a spokesman for the provincial administration, as saying.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

IEDs are widely used by militants in their campaign against US-led troops across Afghanistan.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says the number of civilian deaths in southern Afghanistan has increased by about 20 percent this year.
