Identity crisis at Mumbai airport

Mumbai, June 09: Mumbai airport, identity crisis, hoax callers, no caller-id facilities, landline numbers

Airport authorities unable to trace hoax callers, as they do not have caller-id facilities on all landline numbers

Lack of caller identification facilities at the Mumbai Airport has thrown the authorities into a muddle. They have not been able to trace hoax callers.

Officials at the airport said they had received six hoax calls in the last five months. However, they have not been able to trace the culprits.

This has also resulted in a blame game as both the police and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) are now skirting responsibilities.

‘CISF responsible’

According to the police, most of the calls have been made on numbers with no caller-id facility. “It’s the CISF who is responsible for the security of airport. We have observed that most of these calls have been made on landline numbers with no caller-id. It’s CISF, who should decide about installing caller-id,” said senior police officer.

On the other hand, senior CISF officials said that tracing the caller was the responsibility of the police.
“Whenever we receive any hoax call, we immediately inform the police. It is their responsibility to solve the case but they do not inform us about any development in the case,” said senior commandant, CISF, Jitendra Singh Negi.

‘Can’t nab the caller’
“A caller-id can always help us in solving the case. Till now, we have managed to trace the place from where the calls were made but the calls were made from a PCO, so we couldn’t nab the caller,” said additional commissioner of police, west region, Amitabh Gupta.

The police said that most of the hoax calls were made due to personal rivalry.

A spokesperson for the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said that telephones installed by them had caller-ids.

“There are different agencies operating at the airport and we don’t install all their telephone connection.

Whereas telephones installed by MIAL has caller-ids”, said Manish Kalghatgi.
