Ice cream parlour case: AG to give legal opinion

Thiruvanathapuram, April 25: Advocate General C P Sudhakara Prasad is likely to give his opinion on the ‘legalities’ involved in the Chief Minister’s directive to the top police officers on the ongoing investigation into the role of former minister and IUML leader P K Kunhalikutty in the ice cream parlour sex case.

The Home Department had sought the AG’s legal opinion whether the Chief Minister’s directive to DGP Jacob Punnoose and Additional DGP (Crimes) Vinson M Paul with regard to the ice cream parlour case was legal.

Sources said that the AG had prepared the report and was expected to hand it over to the government on Monday.

DGP Jacob Punnoose had earlier urged the Home Department to seek legal opinion after the CM directed him and the ADGP to present weekly reports on the progress of the investigation and to present copy of the case diary.

The ADGP was also directed to call on Supreme Court lawyer Sushil Kumar and take legal opinion.

However, the Police Department was of the stand that the CM’s directive amounted to intervention into the probe. Meanwhile, the DGP is likely to call on the Chief Minister on Thursday.

Though the DGP was expected to call on him on Monday, it is unlikely to take place since the CM is staging a fast on Monday demanding a nationwide ban on endosulfan. CM had earlier directed the DGP and the ADGP to call on him and give explanation for not following his directives with regard to the ice cream parlour case.

Though Vinson Paul had already called on the CM, the DGP had to obtain permission from the Election Commission as the election code of conduct is in place.

Though there were reports that the CM was planning to initiate disciplinary action against the ADGP for not following his instructions and that the Home Minister had strongly opposed it, sources close to the CM denied it.
