I was asked to launch a peace missile: Kalam

New Delhi, June 14: Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today said there is a need of national ethics for sustained economic progress.

Addressing a national colloquium organised here on the occasion of 91 anniversary of late acharya Mahapragya, Dr Kalam said individuals form society which leads to nation building, and a set of moral code of conduct is needed to be followed to strengthen the country.

”Seeds of a great nation can be sown in families which collectively make any society and ultimately a nation, ” Dr Kalam said in his speech as the chief guest. The colloquium was on the topic ‘the vision of a harmonious family and a great nation’.

Talking about the book titled ‘The family and the nation’, jointly written by him and the late acharya, Dr Kalam, also known as India’s Missile Man, said he was inspired to write that book when Mahapragya asked him to launch a ‘peace missile’.

He said the book was a small step towards that peace missile which preaches to take path of non-violence and self-restraint.

Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, who could not make it to the event due to ill health, has sent a written message saying he was an admirer of Jain religion. ”Jainism and Buddhism are like twins, as both teaches the ethics of non-violence and harmony,” he added.

Later, the former President honoured S N Subbarao, a peace activist and scholar in Gandhian studies, with ‘Anuvrat Ahimsa Award for International Peace’.
