I-T officer sentenced in graft case

Chennai, August 31: A CBI court here today sentenced an Income Tax officer to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 20,000 in connection with a graft case.

Additional Special Judge K Jayabalan pronounced the verdict against D Kandavel in connection with the 2007 graft case, where the officer was charged with demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh from an individual for “closing” a non-existent case against him.

The CBI had registered a case against Kandavel on a complaint filed by S Annamalai who accused the I-T officer of demanding bribe to “close” a case “even though there was no complaint against him”, a CBI release said.

“Kandavel, who had asked Annamalai to pay the sum in installments, was caught red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 in cash and an undated cheque for Rs 50,000,” it said.
