I prefer to be called cricketer: Azhar

Hyderabad, January 03: Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin batted liked a seasoned politician.

The stylish batsman, who was here to attend the Veterans Cricket Association of Hyderabad function at Gymkhana on Saturday evening, played a defensive bat when asked about the current Telangana crisis. “It is very tough and I can’t comment since I have been elected from Uttar Pradesh. It is better not to comment. A lot has been said about development.

My saying or anybody saying would not help. Whatever the high command says I think would be final,’’ he said.

Being elected to Parliament from Moradabad for the first time on a Congress ticket, Azhar said it is a different ball game. “When you are on field, you are confined to the 80-yard circle. You are always guarded. But in politics there are no boundaries.

You have to meet the people and address their grievances.

People use to come and watch me in cricket but now I have to go and see the people,’’ said the Congress MP.

But Azhar still prefers to be called a cricketer. “Politics is my new career but I still prefer people calling me a cricketer than a MP. I never expected to become an MP as I do not know the `ABC’ of politics. But there was pressure from UP Congress and I could not say no to Madam Sonia when she asked me to fight the elections from Moradabad,’’ he added.
