I have no agenda to be prime minister, says Gadkari

New Delhi, January 01: Bharatiya Janata Party President Nitin Gadkari says Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is a “good role model” to BJP-ruled states but whether he can be the party’s prime ministerial candidate hasn’t been decided yet.

“That question doesn’t arise now,” Gadkari told in an interview. The Maharashtra politician believes Modi is the best Chief Minister in India and the governments of BJP-ruled states could learn from him.

“Narendra Modi is the best performing Chief Minister in the history of India as far as my personal observation is concerned. He is a very clean character,” said Gadkari

“I will take his help for good governance in other states also. I am going to taking a conference on how other (BJP-ruled) states can perform nicely. He can be a good role model to governments where the BJP is the ruling party. We can use him for good governance,” he said.

The BJP chief was asked did he think that Modi should be portrayed as the party’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

“He is one of the good leaders of the party, but who will be the (PM) candidate that question doesn’t arise now,” Gadkari replied.

Gadkari rejected any thought of desiring the PM’s post. Mein bindaas aadmi hoon (I am a happy-go-lucky guy). I have no political agenda,” he said.

Gadkari, 52, took over as BJP president, replacing Rajnath Singh, on December 19.

He has promised that the crisis-ridden party will work for the poor–“the last man in the queue”–and believes the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, the ideological parent of the BJP, was not going to take over the political party.
