I had approached Supreme Court as I want to live as a Muslim: Hadiya

Thiruvananthapuram: Hadiya who has reached Kerala after Supreme Court’s judgment in alleged ‘love jihad’ issue, has expressed happiness over SC judgement. She claimed that she was kept under house arrest and she went through a tough time. All of this happened because I embraced Islam, says Hadiya. She said she wanted to live as Muslim hence she approached Supreme Court. She said, “I am happy that I have got freedom now. I had approached the Supreme Court for two things. One, I want to live as a Muslim and second, I want to live with my partner.” She said she didn’t know what’s going on outside as she was in her parents’ custody; when she came out she knew how many people were working for her. She thanked all who fought for her freedom.

It must be noted that Supreme Court has restored Hadiya’s (alias Akhila Asokan) marriage to Shafin Jahan. Hadiya, a Hindu woman who had converted to Islam and entered into wedlock with a Muslim man, expressed her happiness over the Supreme Court decision going in her favour, Hadiya said she has got justice after a long battle and that she wants to thank everyone who has supported her.

It must be noted that while restoring Hadiya’s marriage, the apex court had set aside a Kerala High Court order annulling her wedding. The top court ruled that no court can interfere in the marriage of two consulting adults.

The Kerala High Court had on May 24 last year termed Hadiya’s marriage a “sham” and annulled it, directing her to return to the custody of her Hindu parents.
