I didn’t want to win any beauty pageant: Deepika Padukone

Mumbai, September 24: Model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone says she always wanted to carve a niche for herself in the glamour industry but without participating in a beauty pageant, unlike many of her colleagues.

“I had set up an objective to become a model without winning any beauty pageants,” Deepika told choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan on STAR Plus’ “Tere Mere Beach Mein”.

But the actress didn’t give any specific reason for her aversion to taking part in beauty contests.

A lot of Indian actresses including Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Celina Jaitley, Lara Dutta and Dia Mirza joined Bollywood after earning fame through national and international beauty pageants.

I’m not a film person: Mandira Bedi

Mandira Bedi has been seen on the small screen for several years and has done a few movies as well. But the actress-cum-anchor says she is not too much into films as filmmakers often don’t know what kind of roles to offer her.

“I don’t consider myself a film person. I have done four films in my whole life. If something good comes along or interesting comes along – like a role I could sink my teeth into, I would consider doing it,” Mandira told IANS.

The actress, who was seen in movies like “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”, “Shaadi Ka Laddoo” and “Meerabai Not Out”, says the lack of films in her work profile is also because filmmakers are confused about what to do with her.

“I’m offered films but people don’t know what to do with me – they offer me item numbers, sister’s role in small banners. But I don’t want to work with a small banner which is not going to give me anything. And I don’t want to be seen as an item person – I don’t want that image.

“Also, a lot of mainstream actors are getting into parallel cinema. So what happens to people like us is we don’t get much quality work,” she added.
