Hyderabad, December 08: “While under-nutrition affects the rural population, obesity affects the young and middle-aged in urban and semi-urban areas, who are among the most productive workforce in the country,” said Dr KS Lakshmi, as she presented a talk on obesity organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) here on Wednesday.
A senior consultant at Global Hospitals, with over 11 years of experience in basic and advanced laproscopy and ariatrics, Dr Lakshmi spoke to an audience as eager to listen to her advice as they were to lose weight. “Indians generally have more body fat than their western counterparts despite having the same lean body mass. This is because we eat a lot of carbohydrates such as rice and rotis unlike the westerners who consume high amounts of protein. It is thus important we regulate our carbohydrate intake and exercise accordingly to ensure our BMI ratio remains within the prescribed limit of 18-23,” she explained.
Cautioning that obesity leads to a host of other diseases including Type II diabetes, Dr Lakshmi described Hyderabad as not just the IT and pharma capital of India, but also as the diabetes capital.
The talk proved informative in more ways than one as Dr Lakshmi moved beyond mere friendly advice, to mentioning the latest laparoscopic technologies which would enable those with Body Mass Index (BMI) >42 and Waist to Hip Ratio (W-HR).
