Hyderabad: A popular restaurant, Palamuru Grill, in Hyderabad was fined Rs 10,000 by the Legal Metrology Department for overcharging for the water bottle and soft drink.
The fine was imposed after a complaint filed by a customer and activist, Vijay Gopal, who told the department that the restaurant was violating government prescribed rules by charging the customers more than the MRP of the product, reports Telangana Today.
According to Gopal, the MRP of the soft drink was Rs 18 but he was charged Rs 29 for it. For a Rs 20 water bottle, he was charged Rs 29.
The Legal Metrology Department states, “No retail dealer or other person including manufacturer, packer, importer and wholesale dealer shall make any sale of any commodity in packaged form at a price exceeding the retail sale price thereof.”
The Hyderabad Consumer Forum had earlier ruled that cinema theatres cannot charge more than the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on water bottles and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on INOX Multiplex in the city.
The forum also noted that there cannot be two MRPs for the same product and asked all cinema theatres and multiplexes to stop this unfair practice of trade.
