Hyderabad police issue guidelines for media

Hyderabad, February 22: City police today again issued guidelines to the media asking them to exercise restraint while broadcasting news and called upon them to handle sensitive issues in a fair manner.

Referring to “Chalo Assembly” (march to Assembly) stir of students and advocates over the Telangana issue, Police Commissioner A K Khan said repeated telecast of footage of violent incidents will create a feeling of panic among public.

The Commissioner, in a release, required the media to take extra care and ensure accuracy and balance in reporting.

Khan said the media should follow the guidelines (programme code) given under the Cable Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has also issued clear orders on more than one occasion, reiterating the need to implement the programme code, he said.

Any violation of the orders would be treated as contempt of court, the Police Commissioner warned.

Police had issued similar guidelines in January after the Srikrishna Committee report was made public.
