Hyderabad man seeks police help to find his Omani father

HYDERABAD: Inspired by the story of a Hyderabadi mother who was united with her Arab daughters after a gap of decades, a 28-year-old man approached the city police seeking help to find his Arab father.

Salam Juma al-Shukri, a Class X dropout working in a cell phone repair shop in Old City, has been searching for his 62-year-old father Juma Aamir Ghareeb al-Shukri from the last 14 years.

The Chandrayangutta resident approached V Satyanarayana, deputy commissioner of Police (South zone) on Monday and handed over a petition to help him find his father. The DCP assured him help.

“Through the nikahnamah, we will locate the qazi. We have the Omani man’s passport number. Oman Embassy in Mumbai will be contacted and officials in Oman will be alerted. A notice might be issued in Muscat,” the DCP said.

Juma Aamir Ghareeb al-Shukri had first come to Hyderabad to marry Salma, Salam’s mother, at Yakutpura in Old City. However, after marriage, he did not take back his Indian wife to Oman and made the second trip when she was pregnant.

He met her at their house and promised to take the child back to Oman with him.

However, when Juma came back for Salam’s birth, Salma’s house had collapsed due to heavy rains and they had to shift to a relative’s house in Jalna district of Maharashtra. “Neighbours told that my father had come and even left a letter for my mother inquiring about her and saying that he would take me back to Oman. However, those letters could not be preserved by our neighbours,” Salam said.Thinking that their Omani son-in-law won’t return, Salma’s parents got her married to Md Ijaz, a rickshaw-puller.
