Hyderabad: Farmers attempt to commit suicide on premises of Collector’s office

Hyderabad: Farmers attempted mass suicide by consuming poison. This incident took place during the Prajavani Program on premises of the office of Hyderabad Collector.

According to the report published in New Indian Express, 54 farmers attempted to take this extreme step after they failed to get compensation for their land which was acquired in 1999 by the then Andhra Pradesh Government.

In 1999, 52 acres of private land was acquired for the construction of Golf Course. Govt. had promised alternative lands to the farmers. However, even after 20 years, farmers failed to get compensation.

According to farmers, the Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA) is not taking any action to resolve the issue.

One of the farmers, Mohd Ilyas alleged that officials at CCLA office are demanding bribes. He further said that they wanted to commit suicide as they lost land and livelihood.
