HYDERABAD: Shocking as it may sound. L.B. Nagar police has arrested four youths, including a three engineering students in connection with chain snatching cases and seized 540 grams of gold Rs.17 lakh from them.
According to reports, the arrested culprits were identified as Chavan Suraj (21) first year B.Tech student of CMR Engineering College, 20-year-old Pavan Kumar, a 3rd year B.Tech student from Guru Nanak Engineering College, Rohit Kumar (20), 3rd year B.Tech student and Owais Ahmed (19), a dropout from a polytehcnic.
The students were addicted to alcohol, cigarettes and stooped to chain snatching as an easy way out to make money to fulfill their needs.
They moved around in residential colonies in the early hours of morning and mainly target elderly and lonely women walking in the by-lanes and isolated areas, police said.
About 18 chain snatching cases had been filed against the four youth in various police stations in the city.
Rachakonda CP Mahesh Bhagawat speaking to media appealed to the citizens to install CCTVs as these cameras helped them in detecting and preventing crimes.
In recent times, there has been a spurt in chain-snatching incidents and majority of the culprits were engineering students who were resorting to thefts to fulfill their daily needs.
