Hyderabad Constable quits duty, cites poor career prospects

Hyderabad: Siddhanthi Pratap, a constable in the Charminar Police Station, offered to resign from his job saying his post did not offer any growth prospects.

Twenty-nine-year-old Pratap said he realised his job had no scope for growth even after being in service for five years.

The constable wrote in a letter addressed to his seniors in the police department: “I joined the force in 2014 after doing engineering and I have seen many colleagues who have remained constables all through their lives. It is depressing to think of my future,” said Pratap.

I have been observing senior consta- bles who retired from service as constables after serving for 30-40 years without any pro- motions in the job,” he said in the letter written this month addressed to the Hyderabad Police Commissioner.

Charminar police station SHO, N Buchaiah, said, “The letter was sent to the Police Commissioner of Hyderabad, who has not taken any decision on it yet.”

Sources said Pratap had earlier been rejected by a girl apparently because of his lack- lustre job and poor chances of career growth. “A police con- stable’s job involves long work- ing hours and slow career growth,” he said.

There are over 14,000 con- stables like Pratap in the city police who toil hard for a salary of about Rs 30,000.

Constables in the police department are paid a decent amount currently, after being lowly-paid for decades. Nevertheless, constable Pratap is more concerned about future prospects than his salary in the police force.
