Hyderabad to become beggar free soon

The common sight of women pauper and poverty-stricken children stretching their arms at traffic signals across the city will soon get a new face as city police is going to launch a programme for their rehabilitation and making them employable.

Traffic police have recently conducted a survey and have identified nearly 500 beggers for rehabilitation. Hyderabad traffic police jointly with GHMC are working on the proposed program and wil be implemented by various NSO’s. This Programme will be launched as soon as the required funds are sanctioned, said GHMC officers.

The programme aims to provide education, food, clothing, healthcare, etc apart from training in vocations. As many as 18 NGOs working with children, women, mentally or physically challenged etc have come forward to implement the programme, said GHMC officials.

“We have categorized these destitute based on their gender, age, health, etc based on the survey. We have also identified the NGOs to engage these destitutes productively through some skills development programme to make them employable,” said Jitender, additional commissioner of police (traffic).

“Those who need medical treatment will be provided medical treatment. A number of NGOs have been selected after their available infrastructure was examined,” said a senior GHMC official.
