Hyderabad: 2,091 drunk-drivers caught on the eve of New Year

Hyderabad: A total of 2,091 offenders were caught during the special drunk-driving checks conducted under the police commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda on the eve of New Year.

In Hyderabad, the traffic police caught 1,235 persons from 25 checking points on Monday night. The checks were conducted along the main thoroughfares in the city, including Himayatnagar, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Narayanguda, Malakpet, Santoshnagar, Falaknuma and Bahadurpura among other places.

City Traffic Police Teams, equipped with breath analysers, waved down motorists and checked them. In all, the police seized 1,235 vehicles, including 186 four-wheelers, 52 auto-rickshaws and 997 two-wheelers. The owners were allowed to go after the police seized their vehicles. They have been asked to attend counselling at the Traffic Training Institutes in the city and will be later produced before court.

The Rachakonda traffic police caught 269 persons during the checks conducted at LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Malkajgiri, Bhongir, Uppal, Kushaiguda and Chotuppal. The police had set up check points along the main roads and highways and checked for drunk drivers. All the vehicles were seized and the drivers were asked to appear before court.

In Cyberabad, 587 persons were caught by the traffic police during checks at Alwal, Balanagar, Gachibowli, Madhapur, Shamshabad and other places. The highest number of drunk drivers 145 were caught in Madhapur followed by 114 in Kukatpally. Last year, the police in the three commissionerates had caught about 2,499 persons during similar checks on the eve of New Year.
