HYDERABAD: A viral photo of a hungry girl from Hyderabad peeping into the classroom got her admission to the school.
The heartbreaking picture showcases the small girl, named Divya, standing outside the classroom of Deval Jham Singh Government High School in Gudimalkapur in Hyderabad with an empty aluminum bowl in the hope of getting some leftovers from the students’ meals.
Divya is a daughter of garbage collector Laxman and Yashoda residing in a nearby slum used to visit the school every time they went out for work.
Clicked by Avula Srinivas, the photo was originally published in a Telugu daily with the title ‘Aakali Choopu’ – meaning a ‘hungry look’.
The viral photo has shaken up netizens on social media and caught the attention of one person that has resulted in getting admission in the same school.
National Convenor Venkat Reddy at MV Foundation, which works for girl child rights came forward to help Divya enroll in the school
In a follow-up post, Reddy shared a photo of Divya and her parents on the first day of school.
This time Reddy said, “Divya exercised her constitutional right to be in school. Today our team and other community members admitted her in the same school where she was waiting for lunch bell to eat her food…..Congratulations team. Congratulations Divya…బడికెళ్లే హక్కన్నది కలిగినోళ్ళకే కాదు…బడికెళ్లి చూపిస్తాం ..బరాబరి సాధిస్తాం..”
Social media, in this case, used for the right reasons and really bring about positive change in Divya’s life who can now enjoy her right to food and education.
