Homage paid to Gangubai Hangal

Kolhapur, August 05: The ashes of veteran Hindustaniclassical vocalist Gangubai Hangal, who passed away on July21, was brought here today.

The ashes will be immersed in Ganga river at Varanasion August 7. The 97-year-old exponent of the Kirana Gharanahad passed away in Hubli, Karnataka.

Her family decided to immerse her ashes in Ganga.

Today, the journey of Gangubai’s ashes started from villageKundgol in Karnataka, where she learnt music in the house ofSavai Gandharva of Kirana Gharana. More than 2000 people weregathered at the village.

Afterward the ashes reached the birth place ofGangubai at Dharwad. From there they were brought to Kolhapurvia Kittur and Belgaum.

In Kolhapur, the earthen pot containing the ashes waskept for public homage in ‘Gayan Samaj Deval Club’.

On behalf of Maharashtra Government and Districtadministration, Additional Collector Tukaram Kasar andResidential Deputy Collector Ajit Relekar placed a wreath andpaid homage.
