HMRI bags NASSCOM award

Hyderabad, April 23: The Health Management and Research Institute (HMRI) has bagged National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) and KPMG “Healthcare IT Awards 2011” under the best technology solution for healthcare inclusion category for its telemedicine project, an HMRI press release on Friday said.

The ‘Healthcare IT Awards 2011′ is an initiative of NASSCOM and KPMG to recognise projects and initiatives that showcase the growing role of technology in transforming healthcare service delivery in the country. The telemedicine project of the HMRI is being implemented in the tribal belts of Araku valley and Vallabhi village of Khammam district.

The project aims at improving access to health care and diagnostic services for pregnant women residing in tribal regions. The objective of the initiative, taken up in collaboration with McArthur Foundation, is to reduce maternal morbidity in 140 habitations covering 33,700 tribal people at Araku valley, the press release said.

The HMRI telemedicine project at remote tribal habitations has resulted in 279 live births out of 287 pregnancies that came to term in the last four months. The project has ensured 94 per cent of the home deliveries to be attended by trained attendants. All high-risk cases had a safe delivery ever since the project was launched, the release said. The HMRI has also trained existing 111 Dais in the 140 habitations with the latest procedures and precautions in conducting safe deliveries.
