Hizbul man, 6 others convicted of sedition

Hyderabad, August 28: Alleged Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) member Mujeeb Ahmed and six others were found guilty in the case pertaining to transport of arms and ammunition meant for subversive activities. The First Additional Metropolitan Session Judge, who gave his verdict on Thursday, will pronounce the quantum of punishment on Friday.

Mujeeb, a close follower of HM chief Syed Salahuddin, and six others were arrested for transporting arms to Hyderabad from Ajmer in Rajasthan in December 2005. Coming out of the court after pronouncement of the judgment, Mujeeb alleged that Additional DGP (Intelligence) K Aravinda Rao and ex-Naxalite Nayeemuddin conspired to get him arrested at the behest of MIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi as the latter had feared a threat to his life from him. The other accused in the case — Jahangir Khan, Shabbir Ahmed, Ravindra Kumar, Mohammed Yaseen, Zohra Nishad and Awadh — were charged under Sections 122 and 124 of IPC, 23 (2) of Unlawful Activities Act and Sec 6 of the Indian Wireless and Telegraph Act.

Mujeeb Ahmed, known in HM circles as Amir-e-Deccan, was a resident of Tolichowki.

He was earlier arrested in connection with the killing of Additional SP Krishna Prasad in 1992 and was awarded life term in the case.

However, on August 15, 2004, the State Government released him on remission from the Visakhapatnam jail depite opposition from the review panel.

Soon Mujeeb established contacts with HM members in Jammu and Kashmir and started smuggling weapons for extremists in the State including ex- Naxal Nayeemuddin.
