Jaipur, May 30: IT WAS a tragedy of error for two families — one Hindu and another Muslim — as bodies of two female burn victims got swapped in a hospital in Jaipur.
The Hindu family cremated the body of Ayesha Begum, 30, on Friday. The two women — Ayesha and Sundari Sain, 30, wife of Sunil Sain — had sustained 80 per cent burns caused by the bursting of stoves at their homes. They were admitted to Sawai Man Singh Hospital.
Both the bodies were kept in the hospital mortuary. The goof- up came to light when Ayesha’s relatives refused to accept the body from the hospital, pointing out Sundari’s name tattooed on her arm.
The staff checked the records and found that Sundari’s relatives had been handed over Ayesha’s body about two hours earlier.
Before the post- mortem, the staff had called in Sundari’s husband and brother to identify the body. It seems they wrongly identified the body as the face and body was covered with bandages.
Ayesha’s family gathered in front of the mortuary and demanded her body. Their protest went on for about three hours.
Some of Ayesha’s relatives rushed to Sain’s house and then to the cremation ground. However, when they reached there, a shocked Sain family told them that the cremation was over.
The police and administrative officials rushed to the hospital to calm the two agitating families. Only after DCP Madan Meghwal assured a thorough investigation into the negligence of the hospital, the families left the place.
