Hindu country remark by Meghalaya HC judge creates political uproar; Here’s what Owaisi says

New Delhi: A judgment passed by the Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday, December 12, created a political uproar on Thursday. It must be noted that Justice SR Sen of the Meghalaya High Court while passing a judgment remarked that India should have been declared a Hindu country at the time of partition in 1947.

While the remark was supported by Union minister Giriraj Singh and Shiv Sena, it was condemned by National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

Farooq Abdullah reacted by saying, “It is a secular country and will remain secular. Those who want to talk anything else, they can say what they like as it is a democratic nation but it won’t make any difference.” He further added, “We are a secular nation. Our forefathers made it a secular nation, and we must protect the secular character of this nation. It’s a question of unity in diversity.”

Justice SR Sen is reported to have written in his judgment in a case related to permanent resident certificate of an army jawan that “Pakistan declared themselves as an Islamic country and India since was divided on the basis of religion should have also been declared as a Hindu country but it remained as a secular country.” He added, “I make it clear that nobody should try to make India as another Islamic country, otherwise it will be a dooms day for India and the world.”

Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the remark saying, “I condemn the judgment of Meghalaya High Court delivered by Justice Sen. India will never become the Islamic country.”
According to Bangalore Mirror, Owaisi said that the judge’s statement was an attempt to spread hatred. “The judgment is not acceptable to the Majlis Party. I want to tell Justice Sen that your judgement is wrong. You have taken the oath on the Constitution of India. You cannot give such a judgment. India cannot become an Islamic country. India will remain a plural, secular country,” he said.

Owaisi said the judgment given by the justice sounds more like a WhatsApp message rather than a document written by a legal expert. On his remark, RSS pracharak and Rajya Sabha MP Rakesh Sinha attacked Owaisi saying that Owaisi is the ISIS postal address in India.
