New Delhi, August 13: Hindi may soon become one of the official languages of the United Nations. India is making efforts to push the case of the national language at the appropriate level, external affairs minister SM Krishna told Parliament on Thursday.
Krishna denied that financial constraints were a hindrance in pushing for the issue. India is consistently lobbying with other countries to seek their support for Hindi, he said. He also sought support of the NRI community in pressing the cause.
“We are taking active measures to make Hindi an official language at UN. A high-level committee is looking into it,” Krishna told the Rajya Sabha.
“It is not a question of expenditure. We will have to get majority in numbers,” he said.
Krishna said the UN is producing a weekly programme in Hindi which is available on the organisation’s website and also broadcast on All India Radio.
