High voter turn out in Bahrain parliamentary polls

Bahrain witnessed high voter turnout during second round of the parliamentary elections held Saturday, a top official said.

The Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission President and 2014 elections executive director Abdulla Al Buainain said the voting process was smooth and a good number of electorates participated, Xinhua reported.

The voting centres, he said, opened at 8 a.m. as voters cast their ballots to elect 34 parliamentary candidates and 21 municipal councillors.

“The centres which had recorded high voter turnout during the first round (on Nov. 22) were provided with additional staff and organisers in order to ensure easy electoral process for voters, including those with special needs,” said Al Buainain in a press conference.

In the first round of polls last week, where no candidate secured more than half the votes, the voters’ turnout for the parliamentary and municipal elections was 51.5 percent.

Opposition groups led by Al Wefaq National Islamic Society are boycotting the polls, blaming the government of having failed to address key issues.
