Uttar Pradesh government has sounded high alert in view of the miscreants damaging the marble statue of former Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati in the state capital today. The government has asked all the districts to maintain peace and directed them to clamp section 144 to maintain law and order. The Inspector General of Police, Lucknow zone, Ashutosh Pandey has suspended a sub-inspector of Local Intelligence Unit (LIU), V P Singh posted in the Gomti Nagar police station in connection with the damage of the statue. In the directives sent to the districts, Principal Secretary (Home) R M Srivastava here today said the districts have been asked to ban procession or any protest besides intensify patrolling and deploy additional forces in the sensitive areas. “Intelligence units should be spruced up while people should be asked not to listen to the rumours,” Mr Srivastava here said. The alert has been sounded after reports poured about large scale protest and road blockades by the BSP supporters in different parts of the state following damaging of the statue of Ms Mayawati. UNI
