Heroin worth Rs 130 crore seized; five arrested

Amritsar, March 21: Punjab police today claimed to have seized 26 kg heroin, estimated to be worth Rs 130 crore in the international market, after a brief encounter with a gang of drug smugglers in which five cops were injured.

The Special Operation Cell of Intelligence Wing of Punjab police recovered an automatic Chinese-made pistol and other weapons from the six gang members following the encounter in neighboring Tarn Taran district, police said.

Five of them were arrested while a notorious smuggler identified as Gurpreet Singh escaped, they said.

Earlier, acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap at Harikey village and intercepted the vehicle carrying the alleged drug peddlers, who started firing at them.

The cops retaliated and during the encounter five police personnel were injured. They were all rushed to a hospital where their condition is stated to be out of danger, police said.
