MUMBAI: Godrej Group Chairman Adi Godrej on Saturday warned that the rising intolerance, hate crimes and moral policing can lead to loss of economic development of the country.
According to a report published in a leading news agency, Godrej expressed this on Saturday while addressing a gathering to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his alma mater St Xavier’s College.
Everything in the country is not going well
“It’s not all a rosy picture now. One must not lose sight of the massive impoverishness plaguing our nation which can seriously damage the pace of growth going forward and prevent us from realizing our potential,” Mr. Godrej warned.
The noted industrialist congratulated PM Modi for building a new India and a huge vision of the economy of 5 trillion dollars. But, also said that everything in the country is not doing well. Godrej expressed concern over the social conditions and warned of the impact on growth.
Hate crime, Intolerance
He further warned that the “rising intolerance, social instability, hate-crimes, violence against women, moral policing, caste and religion-based violence and many other sorts of intolerance that are rampant across the country,” can cause serious damage to the pace of development.
Unemployment rates
On unemployment, Godrej said that its rate at 6.1 percent, a four-decade high, and needs to tackle this situation as soon as possible.
Also, massive water crisis, increasing use of plastic, and the crippling medical facilities are other issues that need to be mobilized on a war footing, he said.
