Height of celebration: Lavish divorce parties trending high in Saudi

We have heard about bachelor and bachelorette parties and many types of parties alike to celebrate one’s special moments with others.

But divorce which is a subject associated with shame, regret and remorse is celebrated in lavish manner is really a novel and strange idea is a new trend in Saudi society.

According to Arab news, increasing numbers of women wanting to celebrate the end of a marriage or relationship just like the beginning to show their ex-husbands that they do not care about them.

A sarcastic invitation with humorous cake, the events is held at the fanciest halls with guests obliged to turn up with pricey gifts for the happy woman who had previously congratulated her on the wedding day.

The rise of “divorce parties” affects children psychologically and celebrating it will only leave a very negative impression on their personalities, says Tariq Habib, a professor and psychiatrist, and assistant secretary general of the Union of Arab Psychiatrists.

Al-Saidi urged the media to raise concerns about these parties, and to persuade people not to attend them. “This will cause future tragedies,” he said.

“The divorce parties are increasing in an alarming rate,” said Sahar Rajjab, a certified physiologist and family counselor at the Arab Council.

An industry growing around divorce parties to make products for these occasions from event planners, bakers with cake and sweet shops, she said.

The Saudi nationals should not try to be like the West by having these parties, even though they are extremely angry, said Sahar.
