Heavy rain paralyses life in city

Hyderabad, September 02: The unexpected downpour in several parts of the State threw normal life out of gear. As if this was not enough, the Met Department predicted more rain in the next 24 hours particularly in coastal districts under the influence of a trough in upper air that had formed over the main land of the State.

The State capital faced the full fury of the heavens throughout last night.

In just a few hours, 10 cm of rain lashed the twin cities. Low-lying areas were inundated while roads turned into death traps. A two-wheeler rider was electrocuted while he was on his way to the Sai Baba temple in Chadarghat.

His two wheeler fell in a ditch and he came in contact with a live wire.

The worst-affected areas in the twin cities were: Nagayamaya Kunta, Bagh Amberpet, Amberpet, Vidyanagar, Ramnagar, Nallakunta, Bowenpalli, Malkajgiri and several areas in the Old City.

People in these areas had a harrowing time last night when rain water entered their houses.

As power supply played truant, they had to be awake throughout the night in pitch darkness.

The body of an unidentified child was found in a nala at Jeedimetla today night. The boy, whose body was fished out in a nala between Bhagat Singh Nagar and Chintal in Jeedimetla, was aged around three years, police said.

Police said the child might have got washed away in yesterday’s heavy rain.

The body was struck up in weeds in the nala and locals noticed it today night.

In Vijayawada too, the situation was more or less the same. The downpour was during the day time which resulted in inundation of low-lying areas. The Pinnamaneni Poly Clinic Road was in knee-deep water. Water logging in the city came a few days after One Town went through a testing time unable to drain rain water out of the area because of clogged drains.

Nellore, which received rain for the first time after the onset of the monsoon season, couldn’t cheer for long as the thoroughfares quickly turned into cess-pools. Its precarious drainage system could not cope with the heavy rain and as a result, several localities were flooded.

The Met Department said moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over Telangana.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and isolated rain or thundershowers are likely over Rayalaseema.

Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur in the districts of Adilabad, Khammam, Medak, Warangal, Karimnagar and Nizamabad during the next 24 hours.

Narsampet (Warangal dist) & Chittoor recorded very heavy rainfall of 15 cm and 13 cm respectively. Nellore, Dundigal (Rangareddy dist) and Golkonda (Hyderabad dist) each recorded 7 cm rainfall.
