Hydrabad, July 29: Motorists had a harrowing time in the last three days, with vehicles breaking down in mid-traffic, leading to gridlocks on the main thoroughfares in the city. The insufficient number of cranes and failure of the traffic police to swing into action add to motorists’ difficulties.
A lorry of the Civil Supplies Corporation broke down near the Anand theatre on Tuesday. A severe traffic jam ensued as police could not get a crane in time to tow away the vehicle. All the motorists who intended to drive on the flyover were diverted to use the road adjacent to it. These led to a traffic snarl which lasted for nearly half an hour.
Similarly, there was a major traffic jam at Green Lands, Begumpet, Punjagutta, and Banjara Hills after a bus broke down on Monday evening. Traffic police again were slow to react to the situation and it left people heading towards Jubilee Bus Station and Secunderabad railway station in a jam for more than two hours. Motorists who were stuck in the snarl seen picked up arguments with the police. “Because of the breakdown of one vehicle, we are put to severe inconvenience.
The free flow of traffic cannot be restored until the traffic police shifts the vehicle from the location,’’ a motorist Anand Kumar fumed.
During shifting of heavy vehicles, traffic police are dependent on private parties for cranes. However, one officer said that though they have cranes, it is difficult to tow the vehicle as there is already a logjam.
