Heatwave returns to Orissa

Bhubaneswar, May 27: Normal life was thrown out of gear across Orissa today with sweltering heatwave returning to the state due to hot westerly wind, MeT officials said.

“Hot westerly wind is the reason for the return of the heatwave,” Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director Sarat C Sahu said.

The state capital which recorded 38.4 degree Celsius witnessed a sweltering heat condition with humidity level touching 89 per cent.

Ten of the state’s 30 districts recorded a maximum temperature of more than 40 deg C. Balangir in western region was the hottest with 45 deg C. Other western districts recorded temperature above 42 deg C, the officials said.

In its earlier spell this summer, heatwave had claimed 142 lives.

According to local meteorological centre, the intense heat condition would prevail in interior Orissa for the next two days.
