Washington: State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert has been offered the job of the US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN).
President Donald Trump offered Nauert to replace the outbound Nikki Haley as the ambassador, a senior administration official confirmed to FOX News, adding that it is still not clear whether Nauert has accepted the role.
A number of other officials, including the U.S. Ambassador to France – Jamie McCourt, have also been singled out as possible candidates. Trump held a meeting with Nauert to discuss the offer in the Oval Office on Monday.
Earlier this month, Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, had announced her decision to quit the post at the end of the year.
A former Fox News journalist, Nauert was appointed as the spokesperson for the State Department in April 2017. She has served under former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as well as the incumbent Mike Pompeo.
Nauert was also selected as the replacement for Steve Goldstein as the acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs following his removal earlier this year.
