New Delhi, April 13: Five people died today due to sunstroke as heat wave continued to sweep northern and eastern regions of the country with mercury staying several notches above normal at many places.
All the five deaths occurred in Orissa where Hirakud reeled under intense heat recording a high of 45.5 degree celsius.
The maximum temperature in Sambalpur and Sundargarh in the state, where the heat wave has claimed 42 lives so far, touched 45.3 and 44.5 degree celsius respectively, Met office said.
In Rajasthan, Barmer was the hottest place recording a maximum temperature of 44.2 degree celsius followed by Jodhpur at 42.6.
Sriganganagar and Kota recorded maximum of 42.3 degree celsius each even as Churu received light rain this morning.
