Health commissioner makes surprise visit to SSG Hospital

Ahmedabad, July 30: State Health Commissioner Dr Amarjit Singh made a surprise visit at Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital on Wednesday, even as the resident doctors’ strike entered the seventh day.

Dr Singh visited the paediatric and gynaecology wards and also inquired about the five infant deaths in the neonatal unit on the second day of the state-wide strike.

As per the BMC (Baroda Medical College) officials, Dr Singh visited the two wards and interacted with the patients and their relatives. “He asked for medical details of the five infants who died in the paediatric ward on July 24 and also asked for details of the resident doctors on strike,” said a BMC official.

After 137 intern doctors returned to work on Tuesday, they were joined by 37 more, who had been interning at Ahmedabad, Surat, Junagadh and other places. “We have 174 intern doctors on duty at the SSG Hospital,” said a senior BMC official.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, another resident doctor resumed duty. While the college authorities did not disclose the department the R3 resident doctor belongs to, the total number of resident doctors returning to duty has risen to five.
