Headscarf row: school principal suspended

Alappuzha (Ker), May 07: A principal of a church- run school here was suspended today in connection with a Muslim girl student being issued a transfer certificate for wearing a headscarf.

The decision to suspend principal Mary Jacinta was conveyed by authorities of the school, run by Believers Church, at a meeting called by District Collector P Venugopal after the issue triggered strong protests from various quarters.

School authorities said they were ready to take back the girl Nabala, who was given the transfer certificate recently, but her parents told the meeting they were not interested in her continuing in the same institution due to the controversy.

The parents asked the government to initiate criminal proceedings against principal Jacinta, saying her act amounted to violation of fundamental and religious rights.

Venugopal, however, assured both sides that due care would be taken to ensure such incidents do not recur.
