HC upholds lifer to woman for murder of daughter

New Delhi, March 12: The Delhi High court today upheld the life sentence awarded to a women, who killed her one-day-old daughter three years back, but also recommended for mercy stating that illiteracy and her early marriage drove her to commit the offence.

The court, however, clarified that the recommendations were not to be treated as mandamus (dictate of the court) and dismissed an appeal filed by the woman challenging the trial court’s conviction order and the life imprisonment awarded to her.

“Our concern for compassion for the appellant is not that it is acceptable to us that female infanticide is not a serious offence.
