Muslim marriage age sparks debates in India. Delhi High Court ruling that allowed Muslim girls to marry at the age of 15 is sparking a heated row across India, with some Muslims view the verdict as running against Islamic teachings.
Talking to Siasat, a prominent Social Activist Prof. Rehana Sultana welcomes the HC ruling. She said “the ruling is in compliance with Shariah and we accept it. Earlier Qazis use to feel insecure for writing the bride’s age if she is a minor or below 18 years, but now when the High Court rules in favour of 15 years age, I demand the state governments to implement the ruling for registration of Muslim marriages.” She appeals the Ulemas and scholars to raise their voices for implementing the ruling all over the country.
A 24-year-old private employee Sadia Banu said that “the ruling is based upon the teachings of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and we must accept it. However a girl may not be matured enough to takes up the responsibilities, but based on today’s culture, we must follow it” She added.
The other side
“At 15 you complete school, at 17 you will be in Intermediate, a girl can never be matured at the age of 15. A minor is a minor.” Said Ms. Wajida a 30 year old private employee. She further said that this practice were followed in the olden days, but in the present time it has no place.”
Most of the TV channels are busy highlighting the issue.
Some activists argue that the verdict would allow wealthy people to “purchase” young girls for marriage.
