New Delhi, August 12: The Delhi High Court today came to the rescue of a woman lawyer who was assaulted by some residents in her locality for undertaking the task of tending stray dogs with a direction to the police to provide protection to her.
Justice Rajiv Shakdher directed the SHO of Freedom Fighters colony in Kalkaji area of South Delhi to protect her.
Filing a petition through counsel Kanchan Singh, petitioner Namrata Chanda, a practicing lawyer, has sought a direction for security to her as some of the residents have assaulted her for tending stray dogs.
She claimed that being an animal protection activist, she also undertakes regular vaccination, inoculation, immunization and sterilization of stray dogs on argyle and recurring basis under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
The petitioner brought to the court’s notice that the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension Commission has issued circulars clearly indicating that tending to community animals must not be objected to.
