HC rejects plea seeking CBI probe into Lalgarh killings

Kolkata, January 19: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday rejected a petition seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the January 7 Lalgarh firing incident, which claimed nine lives.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice JN Patel and Justice AK Roy said the West Bengal CID, which is presently investigating the case, would carry on with the probe which will be monitored by the court.

The state government had filed an affidavit opposing the PIL stating the CID was doing a proper job.

The HC had concluded the hearing on the PIL, which was filed by the Bar Association of Calcutta High Court, on Friday. The division bench was due to pass the order yesterday but no proceedings could take place in the court due to the death of a senior advocate.

The Association had prayed for a CBI probe into the firing on villagers at Netai under Lalgarh police station in West Midnapore district.

The petitioners had also sought a direction to the West Bengal government to pay compensation to the kin of the dead and to the injured persons besides demolition of armed camps in Junglemahal.
