HC refuses to stay on surgeon’s name being removed

Kolkata, March 17: The Calcutta High Court today refused to stay deletion of the name of a reputed heart surgeon, who had allegedly inserted a stent in the wrong artery of a patient, from the medical register.

Justice Dipankar Dutta refused to grant an interim stay, as prayed for by the petitioner, Subhabrata Dutta, a well-known surgeon attached to a reputed private heart research institute in the metropolis, on the deletion of his name from the medical register by West Bengal Medical Council.

He had allegedly put a stent in the posterior descending artery (PDA) instead of the left circumflex artery (LCX), where there was a 70 per cent blockage.

The court directed the parties to file affidavits stating their position within April seven, and the matter would come up for hearing again on April eight.
