A Division Bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court today directed the Government not to release water from Nagarjunasagar reservoir to Krishna Delta if the level falls below 510 feet. The bench comprising acting Chief Justice P C Ghose and Justice Vilas also directed the government to file a detailed report within two weeks and posted the matter to that date to decide wether it was legal or water could be released from Nagarjunasagar if the level was below the Minimum Draw Down Level (MDDL) of 525 feet. The High Court gave this directions on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by retired Chief Engineer Vedire Venkata Reddy and ten others seeking a direction to the state government not to release waters from the Dam as the level was below the MDDL. The counsel for the petitioners Prakash Reddy argued that the drinking water to fluoride affected areas of Nalgonda and Hyderabad city cannot be provided if the water level in Nagarjunasagar falls below the MDDL.
The Counsel for the state government submitted that the MDDL in Nagarjunasagar was 510 feet. UNI
