HC orders contempt action against 2 top cops

Andhra Pradesh High Court today ordered contempt proceedings against DGP V Dinesh Reddy and Additional DGP (CID) S V Ramana Murthy for filing false affidavits. Justice Ramesh Ranganathan passed the order on a writ petition filed by senior IPS officer Umesh Kumar, who had challenged registration of a criminal case by the CID against him in a forgery case.

Kumar, who had sought transfer of the investigation either to the CBI or to an officer senior to Dinesh Reddy, had also said in the petition that the assets of the DGP and his wife should be probed. Reddy and Murthy had filed affidavits before the court regarding the case against Kumar. But the HC found that information about the “sequence of events in registration of the case have been suppressed”.

Justice Ranganathan observed in today’s order that Reddy and Murthy had deliberately not disclosed the facts in the affidavits, and it was a calculated attempt to mislead the court. “Both the officers obstructed the free flow of justice,” the judge said, and directed Registrar-General to initiate suo-motu criminal contempt proceedings. Kumar, last year, was booked in a criminal case pertaining to alleged forgery of a letter, on the basis of which he had levelled some allegations against DGP Reddy. PTI
