HC orders CID inquiry into elderly woman’s death

Mumbai, April 16: The Bombay High Court today questioned an investigation carried out by police into the death of an elderly woman and handed over probe to the state Crime Investigation Department.

85-year-old Fatima Jalal, who used to stay in a shelter home managed by Anjuman-i-Fotowat-Yazdiyan Trust in south Mumbai, was found dead in the pit of the building’s lift on August 22 last year.

According to petitioner Jalal Sekkehzadeh, who was her caretaker, Jalal was buried by the trust officials without informing the police.

Though she had apparently died an accidental death, no postmortem was conducted and death certificate was obtained from a small-time doctor, the petitioner alleged.

A division bench of Justices D B Bhosale and A R Joshi questioned the way the local police handled the case.
