HC notice to Maha govt over redevelopment of stadium

Mumbai, April 06: The Bombay High Court today issued notice to Maharashtra government seeking its reply on a public interest litigation filed against the redevelopment of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium (SVPS) at Worli in Central Mumbai by the National Sports Club of India (NSCI).

According to the PIL filed by NGO, Society for Promotion of Equality, Awareness and Rights, government and BMC officials had connived with the club and granted permissions for the redevelopment, which is in gross violation of Environment Protection Act, Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules and the Development Control (DC) regulations.

“After the redevelopment, the stadium which was earlier 3.5 lakh square feet has been reduced to a substantially smaller ground thus making it impossible for sports activities to be held there,” the petition states.
