HC nod to proceed probe against former police officer

Chennai, Jul 23 (PTI) The Madras High Court today allowed the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption to proceed with the inquiry against former city additional Commissioner A K Viswanathan, facing charges of accumulating assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

A division bench, comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and K K Sasidharan, granted the permission while passing interim orders on a writ appeal from Viswanathan, challenging the July 12 order of a single judge.

The judge had then dismissed Viswanathan’s writ petition, seeking to quash inquiry proceedings initiated by the DSP attached to the DVAC on August 28, 2009.

The bench, however, made it clear that no further action should be taken without the orders of the court.

Viswanathan contended that the procedure adopted by DVAC violated mandatory provisions of its own manual and so his interest should be protected during pendency of the appeal.
